"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."

The following is in poorly written, blog form…

I’m sure most of you have seen this video or heard of it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlVQ64g1XWs

Lately, there have been a lot of racist comments being made towards Asians, particularly Japanese people. What is interesting to me is that I think the girl in the video above and all these people on FB and Twitter would think twice about writing or making videos about black people or saying that hurricane Katrina was karma for whatever. I could only imagine white supremacist types making these kinds of comments about black people, but why do normal people feel comfortable with saying racist things about Asians?

I have three theories:

1. Asians are usually passive or passive/aggressive.  I got racist comments all the time growing up, but I never got in a fight for it, and I never saw any other Asian kids fighting.

2. Racism towards Asians is rarely on the news or in the history books.  I don’t remember learning about the internment of Japanese Americans in school.

3. Most of the racist comments are usually under the guise of being a joke.  Like this guy:

Haha, have a sense of humor guys… Oh and fuck Japan.

Another thing that amazes me and always has amazed me is that it’s not just white people who say racist things to Asians, I have heard it from black people and Hispanic people.

Floyd Mayweather Jr’s racist rant:

I think a lot of people who make these racist comments are just ignorant and don’t realize what they are doing, but there are always those people who genuinely hate Asians and they make every “ching chong ling long ting tong” sound like “hey you fucking chink! get the fuck out of our country!”

I remember a while back when I wrote a blog entry about all the racism I faced growing up, most of my friends commented that they had no idea it was going on.  Racism against Asians isn’t really publicized much and like I said before it is usually disguised as a joke.  The nice thing about facebook and twitter is that you can now see hard evidence of racism towards Asians.

Thanks to Jbone for sending me these gems:

And these I found:

These guys must have forgotten that America dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, and that after Katrina, Japan “offered material and monetary assistance that surpassed $1 million and that included  tents, blankets, power generators and portable water tanks. Japan also provided $200,000 to the American Red Cross to aid hurricane victims. In addition, Takashi Endo, a private businessman in Japan, donated $1 million from his personal funds to Katrina relief efforts.”
